Candle FAQ

Below, you'll find some of our most frequently asked question!

What kind of wicks do we use?

  • We use 100% cotton wicks. We do not use lead wicks in our candles! Why? Great question! Lead wicks are full of just that, lead! A lot of candles are made with lead wicks because they help the wick to stand up straighter and helps it burn longer. However, the problem is that the lead vaporizes into the air when its burned where it can be inhaled. Soy wax burns longer and cleaner anyway! So we don't need those nasty wicks to make our candles last longer!

What kind of wax do we use?

  • We ONLY work with 100% soy wax! We don't use wax blends of any kind. SOLELY soy! WHY? Soy wax is derived from the vegetable soy beans. Soy beans are one of the major agriculture crops grown in the US today! It is completely safe and all natural!

Are soy candles just as strong as larger familiar brands that use paraffin?

  • YES! It can take a little longer for a rich and yummy soy candle to produce its full scent throw into the air because it doesn't have all of those chemicals in it to PUSH that scent out in 5 minutes. BUT once your soy candle has reached a full melt pool and the scent fills the room, it's there to stay! It will linger for hours after blowing out too!

Do we use ONLY essential oils for our fragrances?

  • No, we use a blend of essential oils and man made (synthetic) oils. Although our candles aren't made from solely essential oils, we only source from the BEST suppliers! Our oils are free from toxins, carcinogens and most importantly, they are phthalate free!

Do you pour your candles in house or outsource them?

  • We pour every single candle, wick every single jar, design and apply every single label and package every single order! NO outsourcing here!

Can my candle soot?

  • Keep in mind the only completely soot free flame is a natural gas flame. Candle flames, wood burning fire places and flames of any type otherwise, all have incomplete combustion which produce soot. This is natural. BUT THE GOOD NEWS IS it's not the Toxic BLACK PETRO carbon soot that is found in petroleum based candles. It is completely harmless soot and wipes right off with a paper towel!

The small amount of soot produced by a candle is the natural byproduct of incomplete combustion and is not considered a health concern. This is similar to the soot given off by kitchen toasters and cooking oils and is chemically different from the soot formed by the burning of diesel fuel, coal, or gasoline.

While you shouldn’t be worried about candle soot, there are a few ways to reduce it. Trim the wick to ¼ inch before every use to promote proper flame height. Additionally, place the candle away from drafty areas to avoid flame flickering, and ensure that the wax pool is free of debris.

Why do my mason jar candles soot more than my apothecary jars?

  • Good question! Soot will vary based on quite a few factors such as the diameter opening of the jar, the height of the jar and the wick size used to accommodate that jar size. The soot that is produced on our one wick candle vs our two wick apothecary jars is different because the jar is more narrow, trapping more heat into the jar. Our wicks for our one wick candles are slightly thicker, so if they aren't trimmed before each burn accordingly, they can produce soot. HOWEVER - This soot is simply excess carbon buildup on the end of your 100% cotton wick and it is completely harmless and can be wiped RIGHT off!!

How can I prevent soot and a uncontrolled (large) flame?

  • Simple! Trim your wicks! Before every burn, trim the mushrooming off of the end of your wick with wick trimmers or scissors. Just make sure to only trim what is needed and never trim it less than 1/4 inch!

 IF YOUR WICK IS TRIMMED TOO SHORT, THIS CAN CAUSE;

  • Low scent throw
  • Low flame
  • EXTREMELY slow burning

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I ACCIDENTALLY TRIM MY WICK TOO SHORT?

  • If you trim your wick too short, no worries! (This happens more often than you think!)  All is not lost! Once your candle wax begins to melt, you can dump out the melted wax. This will leave your wick more exposed! Relight your wick and VOILA - problem solved!
